EVALUATION Evaluation: Blooger posts of reflective development each week, weekly decisions of applying skills evaluative and reflective

8th March 2019

Today I finished off my project proposal, at first I struggled to concentrate on the task but as the day went on I slowly but surely I completed it. I found explaining my idea was easy to do as I have a clear image of how I expect it to look.
I have also been looking at the equipment that I will possibly have to purchase in order to achieve my idea for this production. I need a decent stabilising mount as this will allow me to get a smooth chase scene. I will need to look at my budget and see if I am able to find a mount that is within my budget.

29th March 2019
Today I continued with research, I was able to create a survey and will post it on the survey subreddit to get reliable data and this will allow me to understand my target audience and what their needs are for an action film. Along with the research I have created a checklist on the introduction page, this will allow me to see where I am, what I have done and what I still need to do and hopefully improve my time management.

5th April 2019
I have finally got the results from my survey which give me a good understanding on my target audience and because I added the question "Why are action films your favourite" I was able to use reasons why and apply them to my film for example, somebody said "I enjoy the fast pace of action films" this can be easily applied by making my fighting scenes fast.

26th April 2019
This week I have continued with my research, I have completed two channels so far which is very good and I have been able to apply it to my film. I have also started planning my film, contacting police to make sure I can film certain aspects of my film and making sure I have props and location sorted. Next week I plan to finally complete all of my research and start production.

3rd May 2019
This week I have been busy filming for other people's FMPs.
Monday: Corbyn's FMP
Tuesday: Courtney's FMP
Wednesday: Cameron's FMP
Thursday: Harry's FMP
Friday: Chris' FMP

Each shoot had its own set of issues such as Cameron didn't have enough time to shoot, Harry received a noise compliant and Chris had to cancel his shoot because it was raining. I plan to shoot my film on the 7th May and hopefully have an early start 8-9am. Because my film will contain realistic looking guns I will have to phone 101 and notify the police that filming is happening at the location so if a resident calls the police about the guns they will explain that they're fake and it's for a film. This weekend I plan to start post-production and get all the necessary paperwork done.

10th May 2019
This week I had shot my film. Our main issue was the busyness of the road we shot on which was unusual as my road is normally empty on weekdays. I had contacted my local police department to notify them that we were shooting and that realistic looking guns were in use and they were fine with it. The day went well or so I thought as when I looked at the footage the flow and continuity wasn't there. This meant I had to reshoot.

24th May 2019
I have completed my reshoot and am happy with the results. There were some issues that we had to deal with but I have already mentioned them on the production page. I have almost completed my research page, today I completed my target audience section and my focus group. I was able to complete a huge chunk of the marketing section, I just need to go over it and make sure there is nothing I have missed out and then it's complete. My secondary research is also nearly completed I just need to include research on theories.

Overall Evaluation (Evaluate Ideas,Research,Planning,Production)
Johns - 5 Parts

a) Describe:
the experience (Significant factors, could be from pre/production/post issues.)

b) Reflection - What I was trying to achieve, what were the consequences.

c) Influencing factors - Internal thinking/external factors/other knowledge (emails, people etc) affected my decision.

d) Could I have dealt with it better? (Closed Question: Yes/No)
What other choices did I have (i.e.: different effects/colour correction/tone)

e) Learning - What did I learn from all this.
    Empirics (Scientific)
    Ethics ( Moral knowledge)
Personal (Self awareness, i.e.: personally I have improved blah blah)
Aesthetics (The art of what we do, experience.)

Final Evaluation

Ideas
Coming up with a rough idea for my final major project was rather easy because I love to make up action scenarios in my head before I sleep and I wanted to finally create an action film that I can show off my skills as a director, stuntman, and editor.

I feel that my ideas page was detailed in explaining my vision for this project and the steps that I will take in order to produce an effectively and successful film. I can improve my ideas page if I included notes I made when deciding what idea to go with.

Research
Research being one of my main weaknesses, I found it one of the most stressful stages in my final major production. I felt that the research I had done on the 4Ps of Marketing and looking at the techniques other film companies approach marketing such as Marvel were very useful for me to develop the perfect marketing strategy in order to promote my film effectively.

I knew I wanted to create an action piece with a possible car chase scene and a lot of fighting, I was able to narrow down the research area and look at camera techniques and equipment that I can utilise to create a unique and successful action film. For example I found out that it is better to use a 3 axis gimbal for chase scenes while a shoulder rig is useful when it comes to fight scenes and this is something I was able to apply to my film.

The survey that I had created helped me acknowledge the target audience that I will be producing this film for and what they enjoy from action films, as well as their favourite action film which then I can study and apply techniques from said film into my film.

Planning
I found the planning stage of a production is one of the easier stages. As mentioned in my ideas page, using my SWOT analysis I understood that location scouting was one of my weaknesses and I wanted to improve that with this project. Using google maps I was able to look at locations that would be suitable for my film and I then narrowed down the results with factors such as busyness, accessibility and surroundings. I would've loved to shoot at the Quay in King's Lynn however with the use of prop guns in that location would bring a risk to my crew and cast's well being and safety that I have explained in Planning.

I could've dealt with my planning much better by developing my storyboard in much more detail as well as including a variety of shot types, not just Wide and Medium. By doing this, my crew should be able to take the storyboard and shoot my film exactly how I envisioned it without much input from me.

Production
Production and Post-Production are my favourite stages when it comes to a production. I love being out in the field, improving my camera, acting abilities, and then going into Post to make my piece come alive.

Before production started on my film, I was apart of the production for multiple final major projects including: Corbyn, Cameron, Courtney, Chris, Harry, Dylan and Antonia. In each production apart from Harry's, my gimbal was used either by me or the director and this allowed me to gain experience and learn new techniques for the gimbal which I could then apply to my film.

Looking back at the production of the first shoot, I regret not checking the footage after we shot each scene because if I did, it would mean that I would've been able to see issues that occurred and then be able to fix them. So when the  first shoot happened, at the time I felt that everything was going well and the outcome of that day would have made a great action film however upon reviewing the footage I found that it was the complete opposite and I didn't like the flow of the footage. I had issues where some of the footage was shot in 1920x1080 24fps and others were shot in 1920x720 50fps. Also scenes wouldn't line up with each other because either an actor would be in one position at the end of one shot and then be in a completely different position in the next.

For the second shoot, I was able to make up for the mistakes that I went through in the first shoot by reviewing each shot and doing multiple takes. This meant that in Post-Production I was able to use more angles and if I didn't like the outcome of one take, use another and match it up, by doing this, it allowed me to have multiple angles at the ending when Courtney pushes me into the fridge. Unlike the previous shoot, I discussed scenes with Chris, Corbyn and Harry to figure out the best way to do certain scenes. This allowed me to get people's opinions on certain shots and meant I could produce a more effective piece.

Comparing
When creating a video it is a great idea to compare your video to a similar video/film. I will be comparing my film to the catacombs shootout scene in John Wick 2.

Right off the bat there are some differences between my film and John Wick. John Wick has gone for a neo-noir feel with smoke that carries the light around, this is effective in making the scene feel eerie as it is in the catacombs. My film has a more grungy tone which suits the narrative.  Both films use either handheld or a shoulder rig during the action/fighting part as this allows the camera operator to move around people and objects at a pace without a huge amount of shake.

I feel that if I had stuck with my first idea and the shoot went well and I had time to colour grade it, my film would've been an effective action piece with a lot of qualities that the John Wick films have.

Comments

  1. Currently you have not detailed your audience and marketing tool you intend to develop e.g. poster? Secondary research must show citations and theory you are studying and how this applies to you piece. Write this today and tomorrow. Planning documentation create tomorrow in the session and in Dawn's session pm.
